A poet's eye — the iris of American Poet

The invitation

See the City Through the Eye of a Poet

Read the poem below. Then visit San Francisco and look again — slowly, the way a poet looks — until the bridge, the fog, and the seven hills become something more than scenery. Until, perhaps, you too will call her home.

San Francisco Is My Home

American Poet

Down the roads of memory I drive,
as all roads lead to Rome;
my own road leads me westward —
where gray fog meets the foam.
Westward to the seven-hilled city
where the bay lies open wide,
radiant in her handsome hues,
captured and kissed by the tide.
Highway 1 still leads to the City,
as all roads lead to Rome,
to my Rome of California:
San Francisco is my home.

CoverStory®

The artwork and brand experience for American Poet are designed and marketed by CoverStory® — turning each poem into a collectible work of art.

About

American Poet

A nonprofit literary brand, built on one idea: that anyone can learn to see their own city the way a poet does.

“The specific purpose of this corporation is to advance poetry, literature, and the literary arts through education, publications, cultural programs, and activities that foster creativity, literacy, and public appreciation of the arts.”

Twenty-three years in the making

The story

San Francisco Is My Home is American Poet's debut. What began as an impromptu love letter to the city that shaped my heart and soul slowly blossomed into the collection you can hold in your hands. AmericanPoet.com was registered November 1, 2003. The book is published November 1, 2026 — twenty-three years, to the day, in the making.

How the book works

The Method

The collection is built to be read, then practiced. You read the poems, learn the tools behind them, see exactly how each tool was used, try them yourself — and then look at the city again with new eyes.

01

Read

Begin with the poems themselves — the city rendered in verse.

02

Learn the tools

A clear guide to the craft: the techniques that make a poem work.

03

See the breakdown

A poem-by-poem analysis showing which tools were used, and where.

04

Practice

Use the tools yourself to shape your own lines, phrases, and images.

05

See like a poet

Visit San Francisco and look again — until you, too, can call it home.

The American Poet collection, designed by CoverStory® for American Poet, presents San Francisco not merely as a city, but as a living muse. Throughout the collection, San Francisco is portrayed as a woman — an enduring literary tradition in which cities are personified as feminine figures. Each poem is paired with a portrait-oriented artwork, inviting the viewer to meet the city's character rather than simply observe its landscape. Together, the poetry and artwork create a collectible series that celebrates San Francisco through emotion, memory, and artistic storytelling.
